
Podgórze Mine
The Podgórze Mine in Kowary is the largest uranium mine in the region and the second largest in Poland. Its workings were created in the 1950s, and exploitation lasted until 1958. From 1974 to 1989, the mine hosted the only Radon Inhalation Chamber in Poland. Currently, the mine offers tourists an underground route of approximately 1600 meters, where they can learn about the history of uranium mining and the secret activities of the R-1 Industrial Plant.
Opening hours: From November 1, 2024, the mine is open:
- Monday–Friday: entries at 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, and 16:30.
- Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays: from 10:30 to 16:30.
Note: Reservations for the extreme route and for organized groups require prior booking, at least a few days in advance.
Price list:
- Regular ticket: 45.00 PLN
- Discount ticket: 38.00 PLN (available to retirees, pensioners, students, and pupils up to the age of 26 upon presentation of a valid ID)
- Child: 1.00 PLN
- Group ticket: 33.00 PLN (reservation required at least one day in advance, for groups of 20 or more)
- Family ticket 2+2: 141.00 PLN (two adults and two children up to 16 years old)
- Family ticket 2+3: 173.00 PLN (two adults and three children up to 16 years old)
- Extreme route: 220.00 PLN/person (reservation required at least a few days in advance, implemented for a minimum of 2 people)
- Treasure hunting: adults 55.00 PLN, children 50.00 PLN (reservation required at least a few days in advance, minimum logistics – groups of 10 or more)
Getting there from Szklarska Poręba:
- By car: From Szklarska Poręba, follow national road no. 3 toward Jelenia Góra. In Piechowice, turn right onto provincial road no. 366 toward Kowary. In Kowary, follow the signs directing you to the Podgórze Mine.
- Public transport: There are bus connections from Szklarska Poręba to Kowary. Upon arrival in Kowary, local transportation or walking can be used to reach the mine.
Tips:
- The temperature in the mine is around 8°C, and humidity is about 97%. It is recommended to bring warm clothing and comfortable, sturdy footwear.
- The tourist route is accessible for children without age restrictions and for people with dogs and other pets.
- It is advisable to make a reservation before visiting, especially for the extreme route or organized groups.
